Salutations! I’m Bec. I’m a Filipino-Canadian multidisciplinary artist who works with all sorts of traditional, digital, and mixed media. Although my background is in traditional drawing and static works of illustration, typesetting, and literal immovables (architecture and building design), I have come to see games as an interactive and living art form. As a multi-disciplinarian, I aspire to broaden my horizons beyond still visualizations by adding games to the arsenal of art mediums I can work in. Thus I would be able to make dynamic art that is more responsive to its audience.
In both life and art, I sincerely believe in learning and teaching fundamentals and DIY first. Whether I am stitching a bag together by hand or painting digitally with a stylus, learning and internalizing how things are made gives me a deep appreciation for the use of materiality and medium in conveying messages, provoking responses, and sparking discussion. This same principle applies to entertainment and games, which in part consist of visual components and virtual objects that can inform culture and how we talk about it. Being part of MWC allows me to embrace the “digital materiality” of games, to explore how digital materiality conveys messages, and thus to legitimize games as art in the public eye.
